The population of the village of Shaia’an is about 9,000, comprised of about 15 main
families. The total size of coffee farming land is about 117,800 square meters with
about 29,450 yielding coffee trees. There are 98 farmers who share the profits of the
harvest with the land owners.
Around 36% of the entire farming land in Shaia’an is for coffee production with
almost 90% being the Udaini variety (named after one of the oldest coffee producing
valleys in Yemen; Al Udain) and about 10% being the Tuffahi variety. Of the entire
farming land in Shaia’an, qat (a native narcotic plant to Ethiopia and Yemen)
consists about 39% , fruits 1% , legumes—wheat—corn about 9% , and 15 % of
farming lands are empty without cultivation.
